Areas of Concentration

SFMR offers a variety of Areas of Concentration to allow residents to tailor their medical education to meet the need of their communities. AOC’s are not mandatory and it is possible to do more than one during your residency training.

  • Addiction Medicine

    • Residents interested in additional expertise in treating patients with substance use disorders will get further training in this work through additional patient management, training in substance use disorders, committee review work, national and/or regional conference attendance and teaching colleagues. Addiction Medicine elective is required in addition to choosing from selected scholarly activities. 

  • Geriatrics

    • Residents interested in leadership and innovation in the field of Geriatrics will gain knowledge and experience to equip them to participate meaningfully in the care of complex older adults after graduation from residency. Activities include presenting at Grand rounds, leading a Geri focused didactics, working with community partners and assuming more patients at a local nursing home. 

  • HIV

    • Residents get additional training to gain further expertise in the care of patients with HIV via one to two year experience including assuming an additional continuity clinic panel of patients living with HIV through a partner clinic. Residents are eligible to sit for HIV medicine certification at the end of their training.

  • Integrative Medicine

    • We recognize the importance of a holistic approach to the health of patients and their families. There are numerous factors that affect and individual’s health and likewise, a multitude of modalities that can be used effectively to treat a patient. The AOC in Integrative Medicine provides residents the skill set of offering this comprehensive, holistic approach to patients in an evidence-based manner.

  • LGBTQI+

    • Longitudinal AOC during R2/R3 year that will provide residents with additional training to gain further expertise in the care of LGBTQ patients through extra opportunities to partner with Seattle's (and Washington's) LGBTQI+ community through advocacy, community service and additional medical training.   

  • Palliative Care

    • The palliative care track is designed for residents interested in enhanced experience developing skills to evaluate a patient’s physical needs and need for psychological & spiritual support while dealing with serious illness.

  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS)

    • The POCUS AOC is designed to allow residents to pursue additional POCUS training apart from the standard curricular experiences to attain advanced skills in this burgeoning field.

  • Reproductive Justice

    • Residents are provided with additional clinical opportunities to gain further experiences in providing reproductive health care to your patients both in a clinical and nonclinical setting. Residents who chose to will gain skills in surgical abortion via additional, protected days at local clinics. Residents are also active members of WA RHAP.  

  • Sports Medicine

    • All residents who wish to maximize their exposure to and participation in orthopedics and sports medicine during residency can do so via additional Sports Med electives, designated teaching opportunities and scholarly work and presentation opportunities.
